Language does not always reveal what we feel. In everyday communication, phrases such as “I’m fine,” “I understand,” or “I miss you” can function less as expressions of inner feelings than as subtle performances that sustain relationships and maintain social balance. Across languages, deception is often described through the sense of smell. Expressions such as “Something smells fishy” and “I smell a lie” suggest that what cannot be seen or spoken may nevertheless be sensed. Sincerely, Liar takes this linguistic metaphor literally. The installation consists of six textile works, each bearing a short embroidered message signed only with a relationship, such as “Your parent” or “A friend.” A fragrance is applied to each signature, suggesting an emotion that may lie beneath the words: anxiety, disappointment, jealousy, suspicion, indifference, or obsession. Visitors first read the embroidered messages from a distance, then approach the works to smell them. As the words promise one thing and the scents suggest another, a gap emerges between what is said and what might be felt. Yet the fragrances, too, are carefully composed by the artist. Can scent reveal a hidden emotion, or does it merely construct another story? The title plays on the conventional closing of a letter, “Sincerely,” signed here by a liar. It points to a paradox at the heart of everyday communication: sincerity and deception are not always opposites, but can coexist within the same message.
